passing the time

when im not reading your blogs, there are alot of obscure (to me) and entertaining sites i like to peruse. here's a list, for your enjoyment:

failblog
it is what it says it is. pictures and videos of people failing. my favorite as of late is the chick who has a "success is not an option" tattoo.

passive aggressive notes
ive been waiting for my own passive aggressive note to come my way so i could submit it. i strive to be not passive aggressive in my written work, simply because of this blog.

awkward family photos
i must say, i have a weird family photo. actually is me and my date for the 8th grade prom. i wrote about him, but ive yet to finish categorising my entries so i dont know where it is. anyways he had the "robot hands on waist" action, and i smiled way too hard. some of these are way worse though.

why the fuck do you have a kid?
i actually found this reading katy perry's blog. the question is valid. especially when you watch the salvia videos. why do people wanna do that stuff? this site should be forwarded to childrens svcs for real.

fark video.
if you havent seen keyboard cat... please enjoy.

you know you dead azz wrong
people are a mess and our blog friend durty mo aint afraid to say it.

the gay storm's got me!!!

The Colbert ReportMon - Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30c
The Colbert Coalition's Anti-Gay Marriage Ad
colbertnation.com
Colbert Report Full EpisodesPolitical HumorGay Marriage Commercial

please watch this.

i dont know if you know, but many of my friends and family members have the gay. lol. the original commercial they showed is foolish propaganda, and my love, stephen colbert really showed that. really? youre afraid? really? im sorry, but, i cannot understand how gay people getting married affects my specific marriage. maybe the wedding, because thered be less availability in halls and churches, but not my marriage. unless i married a gay. and trust me, that aint the case.

*taken from stephen rader's blog. an awesome guy who i woulod so be friends with in real life.*

the extraordinary machine

can i tell you how much i hate to spell the word extraordinary? im pretty sure thatll be my last time doing it this blog entry.

so anyway, i changed my blog name. i got struck by a fiona apple song ,and my favorite line: be kind to me, or treat me mean. i'll make the most of it... etc. i ts such a powerful thing to say. "whatever you do, ima keep it moving as Joy." so there.

i think its immportant to remind myself that the world around me can only take me down if i let it. and thats not who i am. this particular period in time has been particularly trying, what with my granddad dying, the ever reocurring drama with my dad, and random and myriad things. but im still here. cuz im extraordinary.

anyways, here's the video of her singing the song at the benefit for katrina victims. you know the "george bush hates negroes" one, lol.

ahhhh!!!!

so im packing for kesi's and my 2 day get away to luxurious downtown atlanta, and i move my bag, and what do i see? this lil homey on the left side of the pic.... for reals, i am a friend of all things reptile, but this lil gecko dude freaked me out!!!! i tiptoed upstairs and squealed at my mom and brother that there was a lizard in my room!!!! my mom seemed unphased: "why dont you just pick it up? i thjought you liked those things." yes, when theyre outside and not hiding in my room since god knows when! geez. so my bro followed me downstairs armed with a pringles can and chased the poor lil thing around the room. then we got the idea to cover it with a chip bowl and slide something under the bowl to trap it (actually this was kesi's idea, when i told him he may have to come get me if the lizard wasnt trapped asap). then we started taking video. yes, parts are dark, but i think that the audio is worth the listen, especially when my brother and i go into our geico impression.

dedication

so... my mom works for a courier, right? they do world wide deliveries and she gets to talk to all kindsa people when she processes their deliveries. so, why did she tell me that she talked to someone monday who wanted to coury (courie? courriate? they wanted it delivered is what im trying to say) their absentee ballot. apparently the last day to send it in cali was monday and he NEEEDED it to be there by tuesday. yeah did i mention my mom works the late day shift? this was gonna cost the man $400. and he paid it too. he's clearly a proponent of the "every vote counts" belief. you could fly back to cali and vote for all that effort! i just hope he voted for obama...

btw, i found this video and i laughed a few times. i kinda dont wanna hear the word vote anymore tho...

and here's video of russell simmons talking about the importance of taking the first step. it got interrupted cuz we had to go, but you get the gist.

13 favorite music videos

I'm a music video junkie. When I was 12 I was finally able to watch music videos after bypassing my mom's parental controls (if you put the TV on channel 2 instead of 3, all the channels are one off. At least back in the old days). This was back when MTV showed videos. Nowadays, I have about 8 music video stations, however, the quality is not as up to par as it was back in the mid 90s. You'll note that not many of my choices came from the new millenium. Here are just a handful of my favorites. (If imbedding was disabled, which was the case more than I'd liked, I added the web page.)

1 Bush- "letting the cables sleep"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RX3f0iNg4rk

I kinda love Bush (there's a phrase I never thought I'd say, in times of low approval ratings). Even today, the mere mention of Gavin Rossdale will make me drop things. This was a great, well done, beautiful video. Well shot, so much tension... Then there's the twist at the end. I won't give it away. This was the last video that Bush shot and they rarely showed it on TV. Guess it wasn't trl material.

2 No doubt- simple kinda life

So, um, this song is about Gavin. I promise this isn't a trend, although there is one more Bush vid. This video literally shattered the conceptions of conventional marriage, in 4 minutes. I mean, can you see the fury in Gwen's eyes as she smashes those wedding cakes? Then there's the light up BC pack on the wall... Is it wrong that when I take my BC I think of that? Its such a metaphor! As albums go, Return Of Saturn was probably the best for videos.

3 Korn- freak on a leash

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K27d7Ut5bXo

This was an easy choice. Korn was once my favorite band, and despite the fact that they are hurting right now I still love them. This was their breakthrough video, and though ADIDAS was a lil better, this one fused a lot of elements together seamlessly (each directed by a different person or team). For one, it uses a great transition point: the bullet, then there's the cartoon kids, the band in the room with the holes, the bullet tearing through everything... And its kinda intense music-wise.

4 Bush- greedy fly

This is the only group with 2 videos on my list. They really strived with their videos. I actually own their anthology. This video was based on the movie se7en, if I'm not mistaken, with a bit of magical realism thrown in with the de-winged angel, the egg, etc. I have a still from this video taped in my diary from 8th grade. Its a sickness, really. The whole thing looks grimy and just, somewhere you wouldn't wanna be, and I like that. Who's to say that something visually stunning has to be pretty?

5 Foo Fighters- everlong

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_nVa9B8wWA

This is another group with a great body of work, even from the beginning when they did a Mentos spoof. This vid was based on a dream Michel Gondry had (a lot of his videos were based on dreams) where he couldn't control the size of his hands. I also have his anthology, and if you like cinematic greatness, I'd advise you get it too. Shout out to Taylor dressed as a chick! Apparently it was because Dave's girlfriend didn't want any women hugging up on him. This is where those "you never see Taylor and Alanis M in the same room" rumors came from.

6 Bjork- hunter

I remember the first time I saw this video. I was like who is this crazy chick? This ish is weird! It was late at night and it... unsettled me. I love how she turns into a bear but tries to shake it away. Our highschool dance teacher loved this song, and for some reason the video fits it perfectly. I mean, its not the route I would have taken with it, lol.

7 Nas- 1 mic

You may notice there are only 3 rap songs on this list. There are 2 reasons for that. 1, I didn't really listen to rap until I started dating boys who listened to rap (old skool excluded). 2, this was the shiny suit era. Yeah, puff N'nem made some good ones, but they don't beat anything I put on this list. These days rap videos consist of crowds, hot chicks, custom cars, a dance, and one random ass camera effect. So there.

Nas's 1 mic was the shit. The video fit the song perfectly. I mean, the alternating between him talking and yelling was set off perfectly within the video. And that screaming lil girl in the video looks like this dude I went to HS with. The images are powerful and well shot. Caint get no better.

8 Alanis Morrisette- you learn

She wears 11 different jackets in this video. I learned that from pop up video, lol. This vid is one of her best. Even better than her remake of "my humps." and certainly better than her naked "I played God in 'Dogma'" video. Its so colorful! I just like the way she's wandering through people's lives. And I think she stole that horse. The parade scene was an homage to another of her videos.

9 NIN- perfect drug

Mark Romanek. Yes. The birds, the big crazy coats, how everything is black but visually striking... He's known for that Gothic, operatic look. The whole thing reeks of vampire.

10 Outkast- bombs over baghdad

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-m3ijMMkSY

I was kinda pissed when this video couldn't be shown after 9/11. It was on a list of "sensitive" videos, all because of its title. But I digress. Was this the first video to explicitly show strippers? Leave it to Big Boi.... I love how the video kicks off with a shirtless Dre running with about 100 kids. The colors were crazy for no reason. Big's hair all in the breeze, flowy and ish... That random ass monkey, and the choir. The video is about as spastic as the song, and still perfect.

11 Missy- get ya freak on

Missy came out the box crazy in 97. And she's been crazy ever since. Did you see America's best dance crew? Fanny Pak killlt this song! Anyways, the guy at the beginning is saying something like "we will make you jump and feel good." true. Missy is headless and dancing. She is spitting in people's mouth, which is nasty. She is hanging from the ceiling doing choreography. This video was freaky. Dave Myers put his whole foot in it. Its no wonder that they keep working together.

12 Janet- got til its gone

This video makes me happy(er) to be black. Look at it. Its so beautiful! It was shot in LA, by Mark Romanek, and is set in a lounge in early 60's apartheid S Africa. Insane right? Again, a visually stunning work. Everything looks so muted, like you could get a great photo if you froze it at any moment. Must be an effect he uses... If you put this video on mute and just watched it, I'm sure it would effect your mood. Make you feel deeply... Something.

13 Gnarls Barkley- gogo gadget gospel

"if you wonder what it look like, look at me." you, sir, are a sock. I did not expect that the first time I saw this video. I literally cracked up through the rest of it because the video chicks were damn socks! This is muppet "you got served." this and other videos (there are at least 4 for st elsewhere) were overshadowed by "crazy" but they were equally awesome and different from mainstream videos. I like that the band never takes center in their vids.

*PS: searching through youtube for these videos, you start to realize how stupid people are. I tend to forget, cuz I read inteligent blogs, but they really let anyone have a computer these days, don't they? And they'll argue with you and curse your soul, cuz you don't feel the same about a song as they do. Of because you spelled a word wrong. Or because you breathe. Womp*

for your viewing pleasure...

here is that fool singing on the train. unfortunately you cannot see him until he stops singing, because i didnt want to encourage him singing in my face again. so they were waaaaaay down the car when i started taping. also, the chick who called him over was dancing with him before i started tapoing her. he said her flavor was 'butter scotch.' ugh! also, he claimed to have been on american idol and making the band 4. i shudder to think what they did when he came across diddy's people. and check out his "oooh yeah..." in that one woman's face before he walked back over to my side.

bomb diggy bomb a dang a dang

I love this girl! Its strange that she didn't maintain her popularity in America that she gained way back in 97 (I have the cassette single of "show me love" somewhere in my house... Remember cassettes? Remember singles, lol?) anyway, cobrastyle is a cover of a song you've probably heard in commercials, I know I have. But I loves it and I loves her. And her little self singing "10 for you, who wants the other dozen" is ironic, and speaks to the lil gangster in me.

Can someone explain to me why she still looks EXACTLY the same as she did 11 years ago? If memory serves, she was 16 when she first came out, but who do you know that has the same platinum blonde razor cut they had a decade ago? Hmm. She exists in a sexy vacuum.

i got a crush

On Stephen Colbert. I mean, of all the political pundits and commentators, I love him the most. On Wednesday's show he flirted with the black democratic expert from CNN (her name escapes me right now...) and then sang "going to Kansas city" to her. Swoon. And then there's this, which is equal parts funny and cool:

And he is a voice actor, which if you haven't heard, that's what I'd love to be. He did the voice of Phil Ken Sebben on "Harvey Birdman, attorney at law." that is literally one of my favorite cartoon characters, simply because he says things like "ha ha ha.... Loins." if you've never watched Harvey birdman, I do recommend the show.

I'd love to see a show one day... I hear he's very engaged with the audience and he's a true improv performer. And I love his hair.

the girl is mine

i literally checked youtube 5 times waiting for this clip to be uploaded. some things to consider....

1. i didnt know SC could sing so well! i mean, he's no john l but he's holding his own and has nice vocal control.

2. this whole thing started with them claiming to love america more than the other. so essentially they are singing about america. it makes more sense than any woman paul mccartney and michael would have in common...

3. at about 2:51 john legend makes the most intense face ever. its as if he's saying, "you lucky I'M playing the piano right now, or i'd tear you up." instead, he just continues singing, and the next line says enough.

enjoy!!!!

stay home from school and watch tv

I'm taking a sick day. Not that I want to... (yo, I just heard an ice cream truck outside. They are pushing hard, lol) I left work early Saturday cuz I felt like someone was leaning on me from all angles. My body aches. I'm pretty sure its the flu... So anyways I did get the chance to watch snl, which I know Jameil saw too, because she mentioned the Rock of Love skit... But this one did it for me.

I don't know, maybe its cuz I am an obamaniac, but I don't see CNN doing this. But its still funny! Obamapologize? Dead.

Then, today, I caught up on dvr. Stace! I can't believe you're not recaping antm! Why? It was so insane across the board! I'm gonna see if I can find a clip of the chick describing how shed trick out her impala if she won.
*found it!!!*

I was sure she'd be from Mississippi with that accent and love for the fly systems, but... Massachusetts? Que? I think that was a typo. Either way, she didn't make it even though she would have been my choice. Then there was the somalian chick who was circumcized and can never have sex with a man. She wants to be an outspoken advocate for others who have had the same things done to them. Wow. I would say, could you imagine, but I'm sure you don't want to and neither do I. And then there's Claire, who is currently drinking her own breast milk. Ok.

Right now there's a Law and Order SVU marathon on. Yes!!! I'll be watching this until the drugs knock me out.

my new favorite song

Kid sister is on point. This song was literally stuck in my head all day Wednesday. I'm not a "classic nails and salon" (the spot over in my old neighborhood where I got my nails done exactly once) type of girl but I take it to heart in the general flyness area, you know?

So I had to cuss someone out today. Its a rare occasion when I have to take it there, but today I did. There's this security guard (I would call him top flight but I look at that as a term of affection) who, until last night would come in on some, "so and so wanted me to bring her a soda." now the chick who he may or may not be picking stuff up for is cool with me and I occasionally give her freebies. But I think he was taking advantage of it. Then there's another security guard who comes and gets parfaits at the end of the night since I'm just going to throw them away anyway. One day the wack security guard was with him, and I guess that since he sees me giving stuff out that that's all I do all day. But no.

So last night I closed the store (I was alone) and I had to pee. So the front door was closed, and usually the back door woulda been but I really had to go. So I come back and guess who is all up in the store, while its closed and my money is in the register? This Negro! Um, excuse me? "yall throwing out anything?" "I already tossed everything. Good night." this is what I said to him after I got scared out of my skin by the big black man standing in the back of the store who wasn't there when I left. I mean I was gone for maybe 2 minutes. The bathroom is right by the store.

So tonight, I'm moving back and forth putting stuff in the fridge room, and as I'm walking out, guess who I see? Now here's the point where I tell you the door had been locked all day because they were painting. So he somehow has a key or something and even if I had locked up last night it wouldn't have made a dif. "can I get some strawberries?" now, its 1115. I been closed. That's another thing that bugs me. Don't interrupt me after we close cuz the hospitality ends at 11 on the dot. "you need to stop coming through here." "where?" "this back door. We been closed and I don't need people coming in here unannounced.and you scared the shit out of me last night and I'm not the free shit lady." "damn. Sorry." I didn't say anything else to him, or should I say yell anything else to him cuz I had the attitudy tone and mean brow going. My supervisor is always going on about someone clocking us upside the head for our carelessness, and this is just why. I don't need uninvited guests while I'm counting my money. And whoa, you have a key? So do you just bust in after everyone's gone and help yourself? Cuz that's not hot.

Seriously guys. Kick up the prayin, lol. Every time someone does something dumb I'm praying for Jesus to be a fence.

best night ever

For Amy, I mean. My night was good too, but that's the next post. This was my favorite part of the Grammys, hands down. I was so in this moment. I kept saying, "say something!!!" her reaction was priceless. She had just performed the most ironic rendition of rehab EVER, a fact that was in no way lost on her given the look on her face as she sung the first chorus. Let me just say, this is the best positive reenforcement for her.

ooh slim boy ya killin me

Certain lyrics make me think of my boo. Hence the title. 6 more days! Yesss! Enjoy the vid. I was trying to figure out all the album covers... I think I spotted 4 or 5.

*****why did this man ask me to smile (he was a guest, and was an older gentleman, possibly clergy given the guestage we had in the hotel) then when I did, he said "ooh yeah, I'ma put you on my top 8!" um, MySpace should have an age limit. You shouldn't even have the phrase "top8" in your vocab. I didn't know what to say!*****

*****my gift came from Lauren last night. It was such a bitch to open. But I loved it! What was it? A gift card from express! Mama's going shopping! Gonna get me a cute blouse! Her gift was sent out last night and should be there by the end of the week. Then I'll put up pix and share the story and what have you.*****
